The ultra-thin, model look is out, and it has been replaced by an obsession with curves, at least according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). NBC News explains that the number of butt lifts rose by about 1,500 last year in the United States alone.
The trend is mostly associated with stars who have notoriously voluptuous backsides including Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian. The aim of the procedure is to accentuate curves, and it is often performed in conjunction with liposuction to slim the waist, or breast augmentation to emphasize the bust.

The Cosmetic Surgery Field Is Shifting From Fat Removal To Fat Injection
As society starts to move away from the idea that stick-thin is all that beauty is about, the plastic-surgery field is adapting to meet the evolving needs of patients. Now, fat is harvested from less desirable areas, like the thighs or stomach, and injected into the breasts or buttocks to create an hour-glass figure.
As a result, butt augmentations are booming. The field as a whole rose 3 percent between 2012 and 2013, whereas butt augmentations rose by 16 percent. Patients tend to like the fact that the procedure uses the body’s natural tissue, which makes the procedure safer.
New York Shows More Interest In Butt Lifts Than Anywhere Else
The New York Post reports that New Yorkers are showing more interest on the online cosmetic surgery site, Realself.com, than in Los Angeles and Miami combined. In one three-month period in 2013, more than 378,000 New Yorkers logged on and asked questions about the procedure.
It’s not surprising. New York is usually the first to pick up on new trends and is generally more accepting of aesthetic procedures than other places in the United States. Our own Dr. David Shafer told the New York Post that he schedules consultations with six to eight people each week for questions about butt lifts.
If you’re ready to discuss a procedure with a board-certified surgeon, call us. Dr. Shafer was recently awarded the Compassionate Doctor Award, which goes to the top 3 percent of cosmetic surgeons and is based on client feedback.
Dr. Shafer is also double board-certified and an active member of the ASPS. He strives to make all of his clients feel comfortable when discussing their procedure, breaking through the stereotypical patient-doctor barrier to have meaningful conversations about safety and beauty.
