Throughout the years, there have been a lot of misconceptions that have spread regarding breast implants, some of which have scared potential patients into shying away from the augmentation they’ve always wanted. But today, we’re going to set the record straight and bust two widespread breast implant myths that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Breast Implant Myth #1: Silicone Breasts Implants are Unsafe
False. For several years, silicone breast implants were the preferred implant, acclaimed for their superior design and longevity. Then there were some complaints of ruptured implants so they were taken off the market. But in November 2006, the FDA determined that the complaints against silicone implants were in large part merely attributed to fear and had little medical evidence to support them, and re-approved silicone breast implants for use in breast augmentation surgery in the United States.
Since then, silicone breast implants have become the leading implant for a variety of reasons. There are actually a wider range of choices for silicone implants than there are for saline and they are often considered aesthetically and tactilely superior to saline implants. There are several more benefits associated with silicone breast implants, including the following:
- There is virtually no chance of silicone implants showing ripples
- Silicone breast implants feel more like natural breasts
- Silicone breast implants come pre-filled so patients never have to worry about fill-related issues during or after breast enhancement surgery
The choice of silicone or saline breast implants is a unique decision for each woman. Saline implants have several benefits as well, including the fact that there is greater flexibility when choosing the cup size and the fact that in the unlikely event the implant were to rupture, saline, which is a salt water solution, is readily absorbed by the body.
When determining which implant to choose, especially if unsure, prospective patients should speak with an experienced breast augmentation surgeon to determine which option is optimal for THEIR individual needs and physique.
Breast Implant Myth #2: Breast Implants Feel Unnatural
This misconception couldn’t be further from the truth. These days, breast implants come in a variety of textures, sizes and shapes, all catering to the individual aesthetic goals and desires of the patient. There are several choices for patients who are concerned about the feel of their implants, including the ability to place the implant under the pectoral muscle. Patients can also opt for the innovative Gummy Bear breast implants, which are filled with a semi-solid silicone gel that mimic the feel of natural breasts.
No matter what the choice, women can feel confident knowing that they have many options available to them and can discuss their concerns with their plastic surgeon.
