A short-scar facelift is a simple procedure that is suitable for improving the appearance of the central and lower face of both men and women. People in their 40s and 50s who see early signs of aging around their face can come in for this surgery instead of going for a complete facelift. This procedure can reduce sagging skin around the jaw, reduce wrinkles around the nose, and create a defined jawline.
The Right Candidate
Anyone who is seeking cosmetic improvements to their face and does not see the need for a complete facelift can choose a short-scar facelift. Many people opt for this procedure to rejuvenate their skin and look 10 years younger. Typically, people in their 40s and 50s are right for this procedure. People looking for a touch-up after a previous facelift are also suitable candidates. People with excessive loose facial skin and sagging are not fit for this procedure and will typically need to undergo a complete facelift.
What to Expect from the Short-Scar Facelift Procedure
A short-scar facelift is performed after the administration of general anesthesia. Once the patient is under, the surgeon will usually make a short incision from the top of the ear (close to the hairline) that stretches to the base of the ear. The placement of the incision is dependent on the face structure and hairline of the patient, along with the doctor’s preferences. This incision is used to manipulate the skin and the connective tissues to look tighter and to erase wrinkles.
Frequently, liposuction is combined with the procedure to remove fat from the jawline and neck. The skin is then tightened and the incisions are closed. The procedure is shorter (one to three hours) than a normal facelift and also has a shorter recovery time.
The Recovery Process
Ideally, recovery time is only about one to two weeks, but it might change slightly depending on the areas worked on. Patients are advised to enlist the help of a friend or relative on the day of the surgery, as they will be unable to drive or perform taxing activities right after the procedure. Swelling might be present for a week after the surgery but goes down eventually. Doctors also suggest keeping the head elevated after the procedure to reduce swelling. Numbness is present for a few days after the surgery. Patients have been known to get back to work within a week of the surgery, but they are generally recommended to take a couple of weeks off.
In some cases, surgical drains might be placed to remove excess fluid or blood after surgery, helping to avoid post-surgical complications. These drains will be removed shortly, as will dressing and bandages. The scar from the surgery is hidden by hair, leaving patients with a natural look. Doctors will provide more-specific timelines for the recovery process along with detailed instructions in regard to activity and diet. It is important to follow these instructions carefully.
